May 30, 2019May 29, 2019 Christa Avampato

20190529_221842Let the filming begin! I’m so excited that my camera kit arrived and I can start getting a feel for filmmaking with my hands, heart, and mind. Let’s tell some stories that matter, shall we? Take one…

Exactly 2 years ago today, I woke up to my new life after active cancer treatment. I was nearly bald, had a baseball-sized burn from radiation in the middle of my chest over my heart, was on high-dose prednisone and a bevy of other meds to heal my lungs from a life-threatening chemo allergy, and was filled with joy and gratitude to be alive. Simply the best. Godspeed, Queen Tina Turner. What a life, legacy, and role model. Every time I tried to do anything today, it was a struggle. Something, and often everything, kept going wrong at every turn. At one point I was cry-laughing because it was ridiculous how hard even the simplest tasks were, to say nothing of the most complicated ones! This news makes me even more grateful that I found an incredible rent-stabilized apartment in Brooklyn: April 2023 median rent in Manhattan is $4,200; Brooklyn is $3,500; Northwest Queens is $3,500.😱😱😱 Let me tell you about my adventures in bra shopping after a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. I have tried on dozens of different ones because I am now a full cup size and band size bigger, and a different shape. I don't really need them but they help smooth out my silhouette with different outfits and I can't get any with underwires. Brooklyn friends, I'm going to be one of you soon! My application for a rent-stabilized apartment in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, has been approved, and I'm signing the lease on Saturday. This is my grandmother's birthday - she would be turning 104 if she was still with us - and so many significant events in my life have happened on the 20th of May. I'm moving in less than 3 weeks but I don't have a new apartment yet. A younger me would be panicked. Today's me is not. Maybe that is the gift of cancer, of all the challenges I've faced before. There's very little that upsets me, stresses me, or scares me. I will always find a way to be okay. You will, too. Happy weekend.💗 Little Phinny enjoying the sun after too many rainy days. We are going to miss beautiful @centralparknyc when we move. My doctors and I at @nyulangone have been advocating for women to start getting mammograms at 40. My mammogram saved my life. I'm so happy to see this news!
