Wonder: A walk through D.C. to clear my head

On Tuesday nights I play in a bocce league. I walk from my office in Arlington through Georgetown, past the White House, and then to downtown D.C. to the court. It’s a magical ~4 mile path.

Yesterday my brain was tired after work. I’m learning coding in addition to writing dialogue for our AI product, getting up-to-speed on the healthcare industry’s best practices, processing and pulling apart medical triage guidelines (with plenty of medical vocabulary that’s brand new to me!), and planning our product’s strategy, pricing, marketing, and testing. It’s a lot and I needed a good, long walk to clear my head.

As I wound my way through this city yesterday, I fell in love with this city a little more with every step. The architecture, colors, light, water, pattern of the streets, iconic symbols of our country, and people. All of it just dazzled me. It lifted me up out of my tired fog and into a state of supreme gratitude. Movement creates a movement.

Wonder: Eddie’s Wheels restores mobility to animals with 4 legs

I am so inspired by the company Eddie’s Wheels. Ed Grinnell started Eddie’s Wheels in retirement. A mechanical engineer, Ed’s companion Doberman needed wheels so he built a set for him. That was 1989. He never looked back. Today Ed and his family has designed and built over 21,000 carts for all kinds of animals meant to walk on four legs. He has restored dignity, mobility, health, and peace of mind to these 21,000 animals and the people who love them. As a product person by professional and mom to Phineas who has in the past had back surgery, I am so inspired by what we can build with compassion, love, and know-how. Wonder: Playwriting and fiction writing helps me write scripts for AI

All those years working in theater and as a writer are paying big dividends now in the most unexpected way. My writing, professional and personal, has always been something separate and apart from my career in business. Or at least it was until now.

Working on an artificial intelligence (AI) product, I spend part of my day writing branching dialogue. It’s reminiscent of a choose-your-own-adventure story. I have to plan for synonyms, syntax variation, and misunderstandings between user and machine. To top it all off, I also have to make the conversation flow between the user and the product human, empathic, and compassionate. I roll up my sleeves, put myself into the role of the user, and write what I hear in my mind. Then I read it back to myself to check for the natural flow of the conversation.

Seeing life and career come full-circle always reminds that there is a rhyme and a reason for everything. There are no coincidences. Synchronicity will find us when we dedicate our lives to doing what we love. It all connects.

Wonder: Let’s be United Outside with REI in D.C. this summer

Tired of the election season already? Me, too. To take my mind off of the chaos, I’m excited about REI’s summer of events in and around D.C. just announced on Unitedoutside.com. Want to join me on some of these adventures (and have some s’mores along the way)?

This campaign is heralding the arrival of REI’s flagship store 2 blocks from my apartment in Washington, D.C. To gear up and celebrate its impending arrival on October 21st, REI has put together an incredible slate of events that kick off this week. Most of them are free and all of them are fun. From trivia nights to how-to workshops to outdoor movie screenings, there is something for everyone. They’ve also put together a handful paid excursions to places like Great Falls, Virginia, a kayak tour of the D.C. monuments, and outings to local restaurants like Cappy’s and Birch & Barley.

Getting outside into nature is one of my promises to myself this year and I’m so excited to have REI to help me plan and take those adventures! Let me know if this interests you and we’ll link up!

Wonder: It’s time for leadership to be an art form

I spent this morning on Google Hangout with my Ethics professor, Ed Freeman, and it’s one of the very best work mornings I’ve spent in a long time. We had an introductory call about the book project we’re working on and it left me feeling hopefully, happy, and excited about the future.

This is how we should all feel about our work—glad and grateful to be a part of it. The second that our work lives start to take the turn of groaning as we hop (or begrudgingly roll) out of bed, we’re in trouble. That’s going to happen once in a while. I’m not under any kind of delusion that work is nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns. Sometimes, it’s just challenging, difficult, and exhausting.

But is a tough day just a tough day or is it a repetitive pattern that makes us feel like we’re going nowhere fast? If it’s the latter, then it’s time to turn a door into a window and climb out of a bad situation by any means necessary. Once this kind of pattern gets entrenched in a workplace, it takes a massive amount of enlightened leadership to change it. And I’m sorry to say that leaders who have the courage, fortitude, creativity, and empathy to take on the Herculean effort of a culture shift are rare.

And that’s about to change. Ed and I are working on a project that makes enlightened and fearless leadership the norm, not the exception. We’re doing it through unconventional thinking and even more unconventional action. I can’t wait to get these ideas out into the world, and I hope you’ll all come along for the ride with us. This just in: Don’t let innovation be the enemy of improvement

In the push for wild ideas that get public attention, we’re doing ourselves a disservice. What companies and products need to focus on is improvement, not innovation.

The iPod was a better looking mp3 player that could be personalized. Virgin America didn’t do anything beyond providing stellar service to customers who were used to an industry that treated them badly. Starbucks decided to serve strong coffee prepared to order and gave customers a comfy chair in its cafes to enjoy it. Those aren’t mind-blowing ideas. They’re elegant improvements in industries that badly needed any improvement at all.

So don’t chase far out innovations. Most of that is just a flash in the pan that gets a lot of buzz for a short period of time and then dies a quick and meaningless death. What you want is a steady hum of improvement that inches up a step at a time. And those steps will add up not only to a staircase of innovation, but a meaningful long-lasting impact that makes the world a better place.
