“It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small…I didn’t know what I could do until I tried.” -Elsa from Frozen

I’ve been away from New York City on an extended holiday to spend time with my family and figure out how I want the rest of my year to take shape. 3 weeks did the trick; I woke up certain and clear of my next few steps. They involve a lot of learning, a bit of traveling, and a boatload of writing, creating, and building. After months of limbo, it feels amazing to have arrived here more sure than ever that this is the way forward for me. Stick around – this is going to be a fun adventure!

I’ve been thinking a lot about this quote lately as I restructure my life and career this summer. My focus is to learn from my experience, understand where I am, and proceed with courage and faith exactly in the direction I want to go.

Inspired: This is how I hope life unfolds

20140601-021351-8031050.jpgI hope when my time here is up that I’ve lived a life in which I laughed too loud, loved too much, and felt more than my fair share of every emotion, the good and the bad. I hope it’s been filled with confusion that turned into wonder. I hope I’ve been truly wowed by the great depth of the human spirit. I hope I leave with far more questions than answers. I hope I leave confident that I could live 1000 more lifetimes and never learn all that I want to learn. I hope I am just as curious about life as I am now even when I’m at the very end of mine. I hope I give everything away in time to see all the joy in the faces of those who receive whatever gifts I have to offer. It all goes by so fast. I hope I never forget that because I want to make sure each day bursts with realized possibility. I hope I look back on that long and winding road and say, “What an incredible ride! How lucky I was to have it and to know all of the gorgeous minds, spirits, and faces who made it possible.”

“Worry doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.” ~ Corrie ten Boom, Dutch writer

I’ve been trying to let go of worry. To leave tomorrow to tomorrow so that I can enjoy and learn today. After all, the answer to tomorrow’s question might be in front of me at this very moment, and I don’t want to miss it.

I saw this picture on a door at Starbucks as I was on my way to teach my yoga class. I had spent the entire morning thinking about my future since every area of my life is completely up in the air. I took these 5 words on my local Starbucks door as a sign.

I don’t know what’s going to happen next but I do know this: it will be wonderful and I’m going to say yes. I’ve put an insanely large amount of trust in the universe at this juncture. Whoever it wants me to meet. Wherever it wants me to go. Whatever it wants me to do. When the opportunity knocks, I’m going to throw the door open and rush to meet it. My answer is yes.

Inspired: Let the Future Be Dangerous

From Pinterest“It is the business of the future to be dangerous.” ~ Alfred North Whitehead

We have to stretch further than we think we can to find out just how far we can go. Lately, my future feels a little dangerous to me. I feel like I’m skating across very thin ice. I’m taking on new, big, exciting endeavors that I’ve never tried before now that demand a lot of my time, energy, and attention. Sometimes I sit straight up in bed in the middle of the night and my only thoughts are, “What have I done? What am I going to do? Who do I think I am?”

And then I take a deep breath. I go back to the beginning, like I’ve done so many times before. I remind myself why I started this improbable journey and all of the beautiful things that have fallen into place through hard work, dedication, and my steadfast belief in the power of a community united behind a common goal.

“I need more sleep,” I think to myself. It’s almost dawn. In a few hours, I’ll need to be up and about looking danger in the face without flinching. Better to live in the now. The future will be here soon enough, and when it arrives, I’ll be ready for it.

Inspired: Why Reflection Matters

Don’t pine for the past. Instead, use the past only as a marker. It takes a lot of strength, courage, and grace to come from where you’ve been to where you are now. That’s something to celebrate!

Toward the end of season 1 of House of Cards, a restaurant owner loses his business. The person foreclosing on him asks if he’d like to take a memento. “I’ve never been one for looking back,” he says. We can’t let our past circumstances impede our future. It can strengthen us, teach us, and inspire us. We can’t let it stop us. We’ve got to move up, on, over, and through. The past isn’t changing. The present is what it is. The future is for us to design.

Inspired: Put the Past in its Place

From Pinterest

The past is a wonderful place to learn but I don’t recommend making it your home. It’s fun to remember, to be nostalgic, to pay tribute to what we’ve lived through – the good and the bad. However, we have to live it going forward. We have to take everything we learned in our past and carry it forward so that we make better, more informed choices today. We’ve got to learn to keep what serves us well and let go of everything else. In this way we can honor the past without repeating it or being hampered by it.
